How to conserve electricity from Weatherization programs
The Federal Government Weatherization Assistance Program helps enable families that are struggling, the elderly, and low-mid income families with permanently lowering their energy bills. The program provides free or low cost services that will make their homes much more energy efficient. It includes improvements to homes and it also provides education to show people how to conserve electricity and energy. This program started about 30 years ago, and during the last 30 years, this program has provided weatherization services to almost 6 million families.
By reducing the electricity bills of families instead of offering cash aid, weatherization will save the American economy substantial money by lowering the nations overall energy bills by billions of dollars. On average, weatherization services will reduce heating bills by up to 32% and it will lower overall electricity and energy bills by almost $400 per year at current prices.
These are not expensive upgrades to homes. The average cost of an upgrade is about $2000, and remember in many cases the upgrades are free to households. But the improvements made are very effective, and energy savings will pay for the upgrades within a few years.
The services provided can include, but are not limited to, additional insulation to attics, floors, and walls, caulking, repairs to furnaces and hot water heaters, and additional sealing.
