Conserve electricity by turning off your computer.
At an average savings of over $50 per computer, by applying a simple, power management tool to the federal government’s over 5.6 million laptops and desktops could conserve a tremendous amount of energy and generate annual savings of $280 million.
Although most computers today do have programmable features that power down a computer and monitor after it has been inactive for an extended period, most companies and organizations don’t use those options. That is not how to conserve electricity and that lack of effort translates to wasted dollars and energy.
But others organizations are seeing results. Miami Dade County Schools in Florida, which is the fourth largest school system in the entire country, installed power saving software in October and says it expects to conserve energy and cut its electricity bill by over $2.1 million annually by deploying the power management tool on over 80,000 computers. Computers that are subject to power management tools run 10 hours per day on average, down from nearly 21 hours a day previously, according to studies and the Miami school district. In addition, the tool is projected to cut related carbon emissions by 34 million pounds annually.
