Conserve Electricity

Indiana trying to conserve energy

Lieutenant Governor Becky Skillman of Indiana wants residents to implement one simple change at home to conserve energy. She is asking every resident to replace at minimum one standard light bulb with a new compact florescent bulb, or CFL bulb.

Visitors who stop by the Hoosiers Care booth located in the Our Land Pavilion during the Indiana State Fair will get a free CFL bulb, while the supplies last.

Tom Easterly, who is with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, says that CFL's help conserve, and these bulbs use 75% less energy than standard bulbs. They also last up to ten times longer. Replacing just one 60-watt bulb with a CFL bulb will save over $30 in utility costs over the life of the light bulb.

The lieutenant governor is also asking the countless children who visit the state fair to do their part by signing and agreeing to a pledge card agreeing to reduce wasting energy. There will also be exhibits showing consumers how to save energy. Conservation steps kids can take include shutting off the water when they're brushing their teeth, or to conserve electricity, turning off gaming systems when they're not playing with them.
