Conserve Electricity

Conserve electricity with your refrigerators and freezers.

You can reduce electricity bills by focusing on all of your appliances that heat and cool. For example,  refrigerators are very big energy users. In order to ensure that your refrigerator door is shut tightly, the door seal must be cleaned yearly and checked regularly for proper sealing.

You can get the best out of your appliances if you follow these very simple guidelines:

· Ensure that the appliance is located so that you have a free flow of air all around. Ensure it is located  away from direct sunlight or any other heat sources. Maintain more than adequate clearance, as recommended by the appliance manufacturer, from walls and cabinets.

· Use energy star appliances.

·  It is best to keep the refrigerator far away from heating appliances such as ovens and dishwashers, heating ducts, and windows, since direct exposure to heat forces the unit to work much harder and use more energy and electricity.

· Have the cooling compartment in the refrigerator kept between 41° and 50°C and within the freezer, the freezing compartment between 23° and 28°. In the case of freezers, the temperature should be kept at 23°. Also, always be sure to keep the compartment full for safe as well as efficient operation and to conserve electricity.

· Ensure that the condenser coils are cleaned at least twice per year. By cleaning the condenser coils found in the back or bottom of the refrigerator you will help maximize its efficiency. You can even use a brush or a vacuum can be used. It is not complicated. If dust or dirt is allowed to accumulate, operation will be impaired. Be sure to unplug the refrigerator before you start cleaning.

· Although automatic defrost refrigerators tend to be more convenient, their defrosting features use a lot of excess electricity. A manual defrost refrigerator uses about two-thirds of the energy used by a frost free refrigerator and will save money and energy.

· Ensure that the seals around the freezer and fridge door/doors are fitting properly to conserve electricity. A door leak will allow cool air to escape, forcing your refrigerator to use much more energy to keep your food cold. Test the doors by closing the door over a piece of paper or even a dollar bill so it is half in and half out of the refrigerator. If you can then pull that paper or bill out of the door easily, the latch will probably need adjustment or the seal may even need replacing.

· Limit the opening of refrigerator door to a minimum. Do not constantly open it. In that way you will save energy from escaping, and save money.

· A very easy way how to reduce bills is just to keeping your freezer’s compartment full and this will conserve electricity as a freezer's efficiency is increased greatly by having a full drawer.

· A very simple tip in how to save and conserve. Place your more frequently used food items in the front of the refrigerator or freezer.

· Store products loosely to allow good air circulation around the items.
