Conserve Electricity

Conserving electricity myths.

  • It does not use more electricity to turn on a light than to leave it on. There is no power surge when you turn a light on. Turning a light off will always conserve electricity. It will save on your electric bill, even if you turn a light off for just a second.
  • Same goes for your computer. It does not use more energy to turn on a computer. Turning off your computer will always save electricity. As above, even if you turn it off for a second, you will still save.
  • This same concepts applies to any device you  have. There is no appliance or item that uses more energy when you turn it on than when it's already on.

While there is an electrical surge when you turn on a light, computer, or another device, it is tiny. The surge only occurs for a fraction of a second, and because it is so small and so short, you will save on your electric bill every time by turning off the item.

As an example, say an electrical device used twice as much energy as normal for one full second when you turned it on. So that means it would cost you one extra second of electricity expense. So it would cost a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a penny. And in fact, the surge that does occur will not last for an entire second...it lasts for only a fraction of a second. The bottom line is the surge is so insignificant you can just operate as if there is no surge at all, for all practical. So there is always a savings on your electricity bill by turning devices off, and a great tip and one of the best ways how to conserve electricity is to turn off lights, computers, etc.
